Chapter Nineteen ★ Prepare

The fire launched from her hand and sizzled past my left cheek. Wisps of hair evaporated from the heat of the passing fireball. The table behind me crackled and popped as the fire latched on and consumed the ancient wood.

I fell to my butt and scooched away from the deadly flames as they grew higher and licked the stone ceiling. Was that sister mad? Does she mean to kill us all?

The dark one let out a peel of silvery laughter that caused sudden shivers to crawl across my back. I shrugged my shoulders and glanced back at her. Her evil eyes stared right back at me.

Tianna’s mouth still hung open as she pointed at the table that was now engulfed in flames. The dark sister merely shrugged then tugged her sister along and yank my leash. I crawled after them on all fours since the evil sister didn’t give me a chance to stand up.

“Kylie.” Tianna finally said through stuttered awks and irks. “Why did you do that?”

Kylie, the evil sister, stopped then placed her hands on her sides and turned to her sister. She replied, “It was clear the dang fish wasn’t going to cooperate. So, we’re going with plan B.”

Tianna’s brows furrowed, “Plan B?”

The evil sister rolled her eyes and tsked, “Seriously? You were there. I mean how could you not have been there? Tarot told us.”

“Um.” Tianna bit her bottom lip then shook her head. “I don’t remember.”

“For the love of our merciful head witch.” Kylie threw her arms up in disgust. “There’s another room. I can’t say anymore.”

I took this opportunity to stand back up then asked, “Why not?”

“Because, fish.” Kylie sneered. “It’s a secret.”

“Stop with the fish comment.” I replied. “It’s rude. ‘Sides you might as well let me in on this secret since I’m a part of it.”

Kylie’s eyes narrowed. If looks could kill then I would be half-dead right now. She yanked the chain and I stumbled forward again as the sisters led me out of the room through a different door. Stairs greeted us on the other side leading down to a darker part of the witch’s lair.

The two began their decent and dragged me along. The iron around my neck was starting to sting. That’s odd. Mermaids are not allergic to iron unless it was the heat of the fireball.

Kylie and Tianna whispered as we walked down the steps. I listened in on their conversation. The dark sister must have sensed my eavesdropping for she tossed her hand and encased the two in a bubble.

Great, now I’ll actually have to wait to see what this surprise they have in stored for me. It can’t be as bad as the splinter relic, can it? Guess I’ll have to wait and see.

“Deal with it.” The dark sister sneered. She glared back at me then pointed at the table. “I’m not going to ask again, fish.”

“I refuse to get on that death trap.” I replied as my fists shook then I thrusted my chin out, “Make me.”

Dark one’s eyes became cool as her smug smile widened on her wormy mouth. She made rapid hand gestures then spat out a nonsense word, “Pariqulem.”

The world around me turned cool colors as light became tiny needles. Each of them pointed my way. Dark sister made another rapid motion with her hand and the blades soared towards me.

A thousand hot stings assaulted my flesh and I screamed out in pain. It was too much. My knees buckled and I sunk down to the ground as I continued screaming. More hot piercings bit into me and I writhed down onto the hard floor.

“Enough.” Tianna should out loud. Her hand cut in front of the other one then smacked her hands. Dark one let go of the configuration releasing the spell.

Whatever mojo or spell power this dark sister has it is certainly not good. The dark sister slapped Tianna across the face. She spat, “Don’t you dare interrupt me, again.”

The stings welled up on my arms, legs, neck and face. I sucked in air trying to control the sobs that heaved forth from my mouth. It was the end, my end, if I didn’t escape. I had no one coming to my rescue.

No one. Not even the teen wolf or his dad. My father wasn’t coming nor was any of the merpeople from the base. And Pearl?

Well, she’s crossed off the list too. She’s the same as Ray. Nothing but a traitorous merlock out for revenge. I wept and brought a hand to my swelling face. I should give up.

Pain blossomed in my gut as air whooshed out of the lungs. I curled up into a ball. The dark sister growled, “Get up, fish. Time’s a wasting.”

Another kick connected and a stabbing pain seared through my arm. Tianna pleaded, “Sister, stop. How will she be of any use if we beat her half to death?”

“Some use is better than no use.” She replied in a wicked tone then delivered another kick to my kidneys. I cried out.

“Get up fish.” Dark sister teased. “Or do you want to fry?”

I would rather die than help the witches gain more power. It’s the least that I can do to help save mankind from their reign. I said with a shaky breath, “I would rather die than help the witches and your kind.”

“So be it.” Dark sister replied. The room became lit with blue and white light that gathered in her hand.

Tianna threw her arms to help shield herself and squealed, “No, sister, don’t.”

Ugh. There that brat goes again the fish insult. I swear if I didn’t have this dang collar around my neck then I would thrash her good. My hand tightened into a fist.

Keeping my voice as steady as possible I asked, “What is your name? It wouldn’t be right for me to slap ya silly if I don’t know yer name.”

Unnamed sister cocked her name, “Oh?”

My fist shook and I growled, “Yer name. What. Is. It?”

Tianna leaned towards her sister and whispered, “You better tell her. She looks to be a biter.”

The sister with no name shoved Tianna’s shoulder and said, “Shut up. She can’t do squat while she’s in those chains.”

“I dunno.” Tianna said. “Just give her your name. There isn’t anything that she can do with it.”

You know, conjoined twins are interesting. The sisters are joined at the hips and share the same set of legs but the two separate above the hips. One wears all back, of course she’s the one with no name and the other wears white and red with floral patterns. Both wear all sorts of piercings.

You’d think no name would be the one with more piercings but nope. Tianna wins that challenge. Her ears are covered in piercings along with her nose. But both of them sported tongue rings.

If I had the ability to strike them down with lightening then they would charred masses with metal end bits. Though, lightening was Pearl’s specialty, not mine. I worked best up close with my super speed and strength.

“C’mon” Tianna whined and shoved her sister. “Give her your name. Her growling is making my flesh crawl.”

Unnamed sister hissed back. Some sort of canines descended and her tongue became forked. Tianna held her index fingers up in a cross. She shook her head, “Uh-uh. Nope, not now. Bad enough the mermaid is making my flesh crawl… but do you have to do your vampire thing, now?”

The dark one paused then barked out laughter. She held her sides while laughing. Tianna frowned then slugged her sister in the shoulder. “Meanie.”
