I would be lying if I said that I didn’t like supernatural stories.

I’m not talking about the hit show Supernatural but stories that ARE supernatural.

Supernatural stories are my bread and butter when I want to read something in the fantasy realm. There’s nothing like a good chill of something out of the ordinary.

Before we go any further let’s define what supernatural is…

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary the term supernatural (which is an adjective) is defined as:

1: of or relating to an order of existence beyond the visible observable universe; especially: of or relating to God or a god, demigod, spirit, or devil
2a: departing from what is usual or normal especially so as to appear to transcend the laws of nature
2b: attributed to an invisible agent (such as a ghost or spirit)

In regards to Wikipedia, supernatural is explained as:

The supernatural is that which exists (or is claimed to exists), yet cannot be explained by the laws of nature. Examples often include characteristics of or relating to ghosts, angels, gods, souls and spirits, non-material beings, or anything else considered beyond nature like magic, miracles, etc.

What’s my definition of supernatural?

Things that are unexplained. That what may seem impossible is possible with the right mindset.

Or my personal favorite definition… something out of the ordinary that seems magical.

So, why are supernatural stories the best thing since sliced bread?

It’s an opinion, really. If you ask any die-hard fan of supernatural stories they’ll tell you their reasons why they think they’re the best.

For me? I like the idea that there is more than what we know of in our world. That there’s a magical aspect or twist to our own reality and that all that we currently see is the surface… like the surface of the water and there’s tons more going on underneath. It is up to us to dive on down and take a peek at what’s going on below… if we dare.

Oh… you want concrete reasons?

  1. Mystical, Mythological and other creatures do exist – such as werewolves and vampires ~ Hello! Edward and Jake!
  2. Magic is possible
  3. An alternate spin on our reality ~ it makes us rethink what is real
  4. Transports you to another world, time or dimension where you can escape your usual everyday life for a little bit
  5. There’s nothing like getting chills from something that could be possible
  6. Without supernatural you would never have gotten stories like Harry Potter, Twilight, The Dresden Files or even the Mercy Thompson series
  7. They give us hope and spark our imaginations

Those are my reasons for why Supernatural Stories are Better than Sliced Bread.

Do you agree? Do you have more to add to the list?

In conclusion…

Supernatural stories will always be my go to genre when it comes to finding a new story to read. They may all end up being the same story lines but the characters will always bring something new to the table. It’s the characters that I like reading about and seeing how they vanquish the obstacles that stand before them.

It’s the magic of the unique characters and how they interact in a world where the impossible happens and creatures of the night exist.
